Cincinnati Burger Week

2015.07.20 BurgerToday is the beginning of Cincinnati Burger Week (July 20-26), and as a die-hard burger lover, I am READY. As a foodie in Cincinnati, there’s nothing more exciting than an epic week long of $5 burgers at some of the best local restaurants in town! If you’re new to Cincinnati’s food scene, or just curious, I have outlined my top burgers in town, and the places that I am most excited to try.Remember, this is a marathon, not a sprint…There are over 20 places on the list, and we won’t be able to eat at all of them (that would be a burger for 3 meals a day, which, while it sounds appealing now….I’m not sure my metabolism could keep up), but we should definitely hit up the highlights.

For more information, I’m providing a link to the Yelp reviews for all of these spots. If you are looking for my reviews, you should check out my Best Burgers in Cincinnati List on Yelp. Happy eating fellow foodies!

A Few of My Favorite Bars in Cincy

2015.07.10 HPToday marks a day that I have been looking forward to for months…The beginning of MLB’s All Star Weekend here in Cincinnati! For those of us that live in the Queen City, this is a big freaking deal. Cincinnati, home of the Reds, is hosting the Home Run Derby on Monday and the All Star Game on Tuesday, and everyone who loves baseball will be here to celebrate this weekend. I am super freaking pumped about it, and plan to show as much Cincy pride as possible!

For those that are visiting from out of town, Cincinnati is unique in that each neighborhood has its own distinct feel and atmosphere (similar to NYC…The Upper West Side is very different from Greenwich Village, etc. etc.), and so it can get confusing for out of towners. One of my favorite Cincinnati Bloggers, Out+Outfit, posted an ASG guide for her neighborhood of Columbia Tusculum, and Baubles to Bubbles also posted her own list of things to do in Cincinnati for All-Star weekend. I thought I would add to that by writing up a short list of a few of my favorite bars in Cincinnati. Click the links to learn more and look for my Yelp reviews (Yelp name Jessi G.).

Recipe: Chocolate Macarons, from the geniuses at Macaron Bar

Nathan doing a fantastic job teaching

Recently I was lucky enough to get invited to a Yelp Elite event at Macaron Bar in Over-the-Rhine to learn how to make my favorite french delicacy…macarons! I thought I would share the recipe so that you can make them yourself.

For the uninitiated, macarons are not those coconut and condensed milk cookies your grandma used to make…No, these are deliciously light almond meringue cookies, filled with a flavored ganache, and then dyed beautiful colors to match the filling inside.

Macarons are a favorite among bloggers and girls that look like they don’t actually eat cookies because they’re almost too pretty to eat, and they make a great Instagram (see my gram below).

Food Lover, not a Foodie

2015.06.29 Food

Good god, I love food. Eating is my favorite part of my day, and that’s not an exaggeration.

I was raised in a household where my father cooked and my mother cleaned…And my father loved to eat as well. I think I get it from him. We grew up eating big portions of meat and carbs, with limited vegetables or fruit. This sort of carried into my adult life, where my calorie heavy diet (with little to no exercise, btw) would cause my weight to rise, fluctuate, and then rise again…And it has finally plateaued somewhere in the “chubby” area for women.

I’ve accepted my weight, but now that I’m over 25 years old, my metabolism has slowed so I can’t not exercise (please ignore the double negative, you know what I’m saying). And since I’m getting married in just two short months, every bite I eat had better be worth the calories! That’s why I’m so particular about where and what I eat. Continue reading

Hello world!

January 2015 376

Hi strangers/friends/family!

My name is Jessi…On a whim I decided to start a blog today. I am an engineer during the day, and I just felt like I needed a creative outlet or else I might burst!

I do a lot of Instagramming (IG @instantlyjessi), but I felt like that wasn’t really capturing what I do on a day to day basis, and how I’m living my life in a new town, preparing for my wedding, and dealing with typical 20-something issues. So I’m going to start a blog that will hopefully address these burning questions in my life:

– Where is the best burger in Cincinnati? And why can’t I find good BBQ outside of my home state of Texas?

– Will I ever stop feeling homesick for Texas?

– Why does my dog keep shedding? And how often am I really supposed to vacuum my house?

– Why are weddings SO EXPENSIVE, and who can really afford all that stuff anyway? Who has time to personalize cocktail napkins??

– Why can’t I lose more than 10 lbs, even though I work out multiple times a week and eat healthier (most of the time)? If I cut out carbs am I really going to lose weight? Is it worth giving up french fries (I think the answer is no…)??

– Do women really have it worse in engineering? Cause sometimes I feel like I’m so used to the micro-agressions that I don’t even see/hear them anymore…Does that make me a bad feminist? …Am I a feminist?

– Am I too chubby to pull off a crop top? Cause I kind of wore one the other day, but I don’t know if it was good or not.

Anyway, as you can see, I have a lot of THOUGHTS on a lot of THINGS. Feel free to read this or not read this, I am going to treat it like my own personal journal and I choose to write about whatever I want. I do not have a “theme”, which is one of the main reasons why I’m calling this blog “InstantlyJessi” because it’s basically just what I’m thinking in that instance. Don’t read too much into it.

So, world, I look forward to writing to you. Cheers to future blog posts!
