Changing my last name…Am I ready?

This cross stitch I made sits on our mantle

Today I scheduled an appointment to get my marriage license at the Orange County Court House. Justin and I are getting married in California in less than 2 months, and shit is starting to get REAL.

They have a very convenient online form that allows you to schedule an appointment to either get your marriage license or to have a civil ceremony. It’s all very cold and formal. Then BAM! You get to the box that asks for your new last name, if you choose to change it…

Did you know that you change your last name when you apply for a marriage license?? I had no idea! I thought I would get married to Justin, then change my name a few months later when I need to renew my passport or something…But, no. Today, I had to make the decision if I was going to stay a “Goldberg” or become a “Capone”.

And, honestly, I was caught completely off guard.

Why I will never get over Texas

Texans love Texas. Like, an inordinate amount. If you meet someone from Texas (ahem, you’re listening to one right now), it is guaranteed that within 5 minutes you will know that they are from the greatest state in the Union. And that’s just because we’re so PROUD of where we’re from. I have a bad habit of saying “Well, in Texas we do….” and ending stories with “That must be a Texas thing.”

Apparently this is not normal, so I want to offer an explanation to non-Texas folk as to why Texas people love their state so much (and continue to love it after we leave).

Rain and Rainbows

Last Friday something momentous happened in the world, and that is that gay marriage is now legal in all 50 states in the US…But you already knew that, because you are not living under a rock.

That week was interesting, because I had already signed up Justin, Atlas (our dog), and I to march with P&G in the Cincinnati Pride Parade. So I almost felt like I was ahead of the game, right?! Like, before this big thing happened with the Supreme Court, I was already an Ally at work, and I was already doing what I can to support LGBTQ rights (I had an Ally sticker on my badge and everything!). So, I felt pretty good about myself…Self-righteous almost.

And then that made me feel guilty, because I almost felt like I was congratulating myself for some amazing accomplishment that I had basically no part in.  Continue reading

Hello world!

January 2015 376

Hi strangers/friends/family!

My name is Jessi…On a whim I decided to start a blog today. I am an engineer during the day, and I just felt like I needed a creative outlet or else I might burst!

I do a lot of Instagramming (IG @instantlyjessi), but I felt like that wasn’t really capturing what I do on a day to day basis, and how I’m living my life in a new town, preparing for my wedding, and dealing with typical 20-something issues. So I’m going to start a blog that will hopefully address these burning questions in my life:

– Where is the best burger in Cincinnati? And why can’t I find good BBQ outside of my home state of Texas?

– Will I ever stop feeling homesick for Texas?

– Why does my dog keep shedding? And how often am I really supposed to vacuum my house?

– Why are weddings SO EXPENSIVE, and who can really afford all that stuff anyway? Who has time to personalize cocktail napkins??

– Why can’t I lose more than 10 lbs, even though I work out multiple times a week and eat healthier (most of the time)? If I cut out carbs am I really going to lose weight? Is it worth giving up french fries (I think the answer is no…)??

– Do women really have it worse in engineering? Cause sometimes I feel like I’m so used to the micro-agressions that I don’t even see/hear them anymore…Does that make me a bad feminist? …Am I a feminist?

– Am I too chubby to pull off a crop top? Cause I kind of wore one the other day, but I don’t know if it was good or not.

Anyway, as you can see, I have a lot of THOUGHTS on a lot of THINGS. Feel free to read this or not read this, I am going to treat it like my own personal journal and I choose to write about whatever I want. I do not have a “theme”, which is one of the main reasons why I’m calling this blog “InstantlyJessi” because it’s basically just what I’m thinking in that instance. Don’t read too much into it.

So, world, I look forward to writing to you. Cheers to future blog posts!
